Over 1.5 Trillion Text Messages Sent in 2009

Friday, March 26th, 2010

What a difference a year makes. The newly released CTIA–The Wireless Association® Semi-Annual Wireless Industry survey confirms the continuing and increasing use of text messages and MMS. Highlights of the survey include:

According to the survey, text messaging continues to be enormously popular, with more than 822 billion text messages sent and received on carriers’ networks during the last half of 2009—amounting to almost 5 billion messages per day at the end of the year.  During the 2009 calendar year, there were more than 1.5 trillion text messages reported on carriers’ networks.  Wireless subscribers are also sending more pictures and other multimedia messages with their mobile devices—more than 24.2 billion MMS messages were reported for the last half of 2009. That’s more than double the number from the previous year, when only 9.3 billion were reported for the last half of 2008.

Best Practices in Mobile Marketing – Kodak Report Available

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I found this great report on the Mobile Marketing Association’s website where Kodak discusses their best practices for mobile marketing campaigns. It contains really useful information, and whether you’re beginner or at an advanced level  –  it’s well worth the read.

I recently heard that a major mobile marketing service, Clickatell inexplicably went down for over a week without any notice to their customers or response to their clients’ inquiries.  I am not privy to the reason for the problem, but I thought it may be a teachable moment and   perhaps a cautionary tale about understanding and abiding by mobile marketing best practices. In addition to the Kodak report, you can also view the MMA’s Guide to Best Practices for a refresher.

At Mobivity, we take the utmost care to ensure that our clients follow best practices, and that we build the proper safeguards into our technology and on-demand platform. We do not allow anyone to send out a mobile marketing campaign without having an opt in process for the recipients, we do not allow spam, pornography and vet our clients to the best of our ability. We do so because if one client abuses our shared short code, it could ultimately affect all of our clients.

As a reminder to anyone who no longer wants to use a shared short code Mobivity offers a great dedicated short code program starting at only $999 a month. Please contact gladen@mobivity.com to learn more.

If you have any questions or comments about Mobile Marketing best practices, please let us know at support@mobivity.com.

Mobivity 2.0 – Check out the new Dashboard Reporting and Analytics Features

Monday, March 1st, 2010

In my post last week about the Mobivity 2.0 Beta, I promised more detailed information on the new features.

The Mobivity 2.0 dashboard provides you the ability to instantly see charting and reporting for your keywords.  When you login into the dashboard the date range is automatically set to the current month.  In the Overview area, you’ll see charting for the top performing keywords and the Keywords data table gives you all of the statistics for your keywords. (there’s no data in the screen shot below because the date is set to today, which is the first of the month and no blasts have been sent for the month yet.)

To change the date range, click on the arrow next to the date range  in the upper right hand corner and select the time period of your choice. You can either use one of the preset selections or set a custom date range.

image

Once you’ve changed the date range, all of the data on the dashboard will refresh to that time period. In the screen shot below, you’ll notice that the the charting in the Overview now shows you the top 5 highest performing keywords and the data in the Keywords table has been refreshed as well for the custom range that I set to 12/01/2009 through 3/1/2009:

image

To check out the Mobivity 2.0 Beta, see my blog post (2/24/10) or go to your current Mobivity dashboard at  http://cpanel.mobivity.com/, click on the link above the login and use your current username and password to login into the new version.  As always, we welcome your comments and you can use the support link to send us your thoughts, comments or questions.  I’ll be giving you more details on the new features in coming blog posts.
