Tracking Mobile Web Site Statistics – How Is It Done?

December 12th, 2007 by Greg Harris

On the wired Internet, web site statistics packages and services  are a “dime a dozen”. Everything from simple free hit counters, to free Google Analytics, to high priced deep analytic packages exist.

Internet browsers have enough intelligence built in that Javascript and cookies can be used to help collect the information needed to analyze traffic and make good business decisions.

Unfortunately the mobile web does not work this way. There are thousands of different web browsers, and we are limited by their capabilities. We also have to deal with issues regarding identifying unique visitors since many visitors show up from the same IP addresses of the carriers.

There is also a ton of additional information we want to know about on the the mobile web.

  • Who is the carrier?
  • What type of phone?
  • What % of visitors support streaming video?
  • What % of visitors from the U.S. support MMS?
  • What is my conversion rate by carrier? By phone? By phone capability?
  • How much money did we make from Nokia phone owners vs. Motorola?

The questions that can be answered are endless. But only if the proper data is collected, processed and reported. Existing web analytics packages can’t do this.

Mobile Visions has been developing a hosted mobile web analytics package called Mobilytics that will answer all of these questions and more. While there are a few packages out there, we have yet to find a full featured hosted solution for mobile web sites. Most mobile site publishers do not want to install dedicated servers and software, and deal with expensive solutions. Mobilytics will be hosted on our servers, and will have a completely FREE version!

Watch for our beta test announcement here on the Mobivity blog very soon.

In the meantime, we have been doing research into what people are currently doing to track mobile web statistics, and what information they would want to know if they had access to it.

I would very much appreciate it if those of you with mobile sites, and those planning one, would take a few minutes to take a simple survey we put together.

Your contact information is not required, and we are not looking for leads to sell our product to (especially since it is free). We are reaching out to the mobile community to better understand what is currently being done, and what is needed so we can roll-out upgrades and make this the best analytics package for the mobile web.

Thanks! I look forward to your responses and future discussions on the topic.

If you have a mobile site, how is it doing? Do you know?
Admittedly, it is more than a bit difficult to track statistics on the mobile web. If you have a minute you might like to take a very quick survey about mobile web tracking. You will likely find …
