Campaign Cost Between $10,000 and $100,000 Dollars??

August 16th, 2006 by Greg Harris

Now I’m pumped! I just read a posting on Chicago Business about small businesses using text campaigns along with their existing media buys. As I read the article I thought to myself, YES! this is exactly what we are are building this platform for. The advertiser can put the a message on their print ads offering a free something if they text in their keyword. The advertiser finally would be able to get instant feedback from a print ad or radio campaign. Then I got to this part…

For example, a local client of ours, Ultimate Exposure Tanning Salon, wanted to get more people in the salon. A disc jockey at WKSC-FM (103.5) announced live on the radio that the 103rd person to text the word “TAN” to a five-digit number (called a short code) would win a free tanning membership. Within a few minutes, about 400 people sent in a text message.Â

How much does it cost?

It can range between $10,000 and $100,000. If a business does a promotion with a local radio station that already has our software, the cost will be closer to $10,000.

Huh? Am I missing something?? Let’s see… even at .10 per message, plus the cost of our keyword service, we’re talking under $100.00. Now I don’t know the latest “live commercial” read rates, but I’m sure a 10 second live read on a radio station in Chicago is not going for $9,900 – $99,900.

How can we expect small business to embrace mobile marketing when we’re throwing out prices like this??

[...] The other they talk about is similar to one that we blogged about some time ago. It’s a tanning salon chain in Chicago. [...]
